School History

Tseung Kwan O Government Secondary School - a grammar school - was set up as part of the School Renewal Programme of the Education Bureau (formerly the Education Department). The precursor of TKOGSS was Kennedy Town Government Secondary School). At the beginning, the site of the school was Lot No.22, Tseung Kwan O, which was later re-named No.2 King Yin Lane. The commencement of classes in September 1988 was followed by an Opening Ceremony on 1st March 1990 which was presided over by Mrs. Allan Lee (Mr. Allan Lee being the first Legislative Councillor). Mr. Lee Yuet-ting, Director of Education, delivered the opening speech. Since then, TKOGSS has become one of the oldest secondary schools in the Tseung Kwan O New Town. The maxim "Prepare yourself that you may serve" was adopted in 1998 as the school motto, which serves to inculcate in the students a moral character and a will to strengthen themselves constantly, as well as respect for others and a spirit of co-operation in group life. In this way, they will be able to serve the community and fulfil what is given in the lyrics of the school songs --- live a decorous and self-disciplined life; look after and provide for one's family; ensure good governance of the state and bring peace and stability to the world; explore the nature of things and hence apply one's intellect, successfully serve one's motherland in return.

Class Structure and School Facilities

The school campus covers an area of 8,500 square meters, with beautiful surroundings and comprehensive facilities. We offer classes from S1 to S6, totaling 24 classes. To facilitate electronic teaching, all classrooms and special rooms are equipped with wireless networks (WiFi). The school also pays close attention to the physical and mental well-being of students, continuously optimizing the campus environment.

The recently completed "Chill Room" was created by the school to provide students with a space for spiritual purification and stress relief. Additionally, the school has a fish pond, a pet house, and a jellyfish aquarium, aiming to transform the campus into a small animal friendly habitat where students can learn and interact with animals. This not only helps students reduce stress but also fosters their compassion.

Understanding the importance of campus greening, artificial plant decorations have been added near the jellyfish area. Next to the sports field, there is a leisure garden, a greenhouse, and the newly established Chinese herb garden, propagated from plants obtained from the Hong Kong Baptist University. The garden is equipped with sun umbrellas and tables for students to dine and rest. During breaks or after classes, S1 students are involved in the "Serve the School Program", responsible for feeding fish, tending to greenhouse plants, and Chinese herbs.

The school's sports field is unique, featuring a colorful heart-shaped design instead of traditional blue and green. During leisure time, students can practice their basketball skills on this heart-shaped field, which is as big as two standard basketball courts, making students feel cared for every day. Students can also strengthen their physical fitness in the gym, ensuring a balanced development of learning and sports.

The academic and artistic atmosphere at the school is rich. Pianos are available from the ground floor to the fourth floor. During breaks or lunchtime, students can showcase their talents, socialize through music, relieve stress, and build confidence. To encourage energy conservation, solar panels are installed on the school building rooftops, converting sunlight into usable electricity.

Furthermore, the school actively promotes STEAM education to prepare students for the future. With strong support from the Education Bureau and the Architectural Services Department, we have established an innovative and advanced STEAM laboratory. Collaborations with various local universities such as the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the City University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Baptist University provide students with diverse learning experiences.

In addition to educational facilities, the school also features a "School History Gallery" to introduce the history of our school's development.
